Cat Cleanup: China culling pets to keep up appearances
Mikey 11 commentsIf you needed another reason to boycott the Beijing Olympics, consider this. In an aggressive effort to clean up the city in preparation for the games, hundreds of cats are being rounded up every day and sent to what animal welfare groups are describing as feline 'death camps'.
Residents are giving up their beloved pets because a government campaign warned of diseases cats carry and ordered residents to help clear the streets of them.
Animal campaigners are viewing this as another one of the extreme measures being taken by the communist government to give a squeaky clean impression to the impending visitors.

Monday 10th March 2008 | 12:03 PMcoming from a government where everything is censored to the max (including google), i am very surprised (and extremely disgusted) that this has been shown to the world media. i guess the fact that life, in no matter which form, is still meaningless. and to put such a fear factor into their own ppl shows what mass hysteria can do.
yes, animals can share disease with ppl (zoonotic) but is only a few diseases that can be transferred, and to treat animals in the manner they are being treated, with no level of decency or humanity is lower than a snakes belly. if in fact they are so very scared of a mass outbreak of disease, they should humanely euthanase these cats, not let them suffer as they are, especially the one with raging cat - flu pictured, which incidently is not zoonotic. or have a programme where desexing their cats and vaccinating is free or close too.
there is absolutely no reason at all that this should be happening. but it just goes to show you how controlling a goverment can be, and how ignorant its ppl are to follow

Tuesday 11th March 2008 | 07:17 AMWhile this is pretty terrible, anyone who has been to the provinces of any asian country (china, philippines, singapore, HK, vietnam etc) can attest to the often overwhelming numbers of cats, rats (I'm sure there is a correlation between the 2) and all sorts of flea ridden animals.
In saying that, it is part of the culture.

Tuesday 11th March 2008 | 03:12 PMurm, part of what culture? i live in a "provinces of any asian country" and i don't see any "all sorts of flea ridden animals" running around being "flea ridden."
There are stray cats and dogs of course, but they are certainly not overwhelming the place. haha

Tuesday 11th March 2008 | 05:04 PMJust because western cultures classify these animals as pests, oh sorry pets, does not meen it is wrong to cull overpopulating numbers of a species that has been causing problems in that part of the world for a long time.(Your Parents are coming to visit and its Time To Clean).Dont be so quick to judge,Rabbits Kangaroos and Dingos, ring any bells ,not nessesarilly pets but as viewed upon by the international community as beeing Icons or creatures that identify this great country of ours have and if not still are classed as pests and have been at the top of the culling lilst for decades.Cats are obviously a problem for them that needed to be adressed long before the international spotlight was cast.
