Perhaps it was just a momentary lapse in judgement. A 160 pound bear seems to have forgotten where it stood in the food chain as it was chased up a tree by a couple of brave kittens. Just repeating that last part, a bear was chased up a tree by kittens. His face will be red when this news gets back to the bear cave.
