Metallica vs the Internet: The second coming

If there was ever one band famous for p*sssing off the internet, it has to be Metallica. Famous for their anti-p2p shenanigans from almost a decade ago (the Napster takedown), it appears the band now has a problem with some early reviews posted by a handful of bloggers. The crazy part is, these bloggers were among the journalists personally invited by the band to come in to listen to the new material.

The problem is the band says the tracks demoed were only rough mixes not ready for prime time. One blogger has complied but not for the reasons you would think.

In any event, Metallica probably shouldn't have invited bloggers to listen to unfinished tracks. I mean, what did they expect them to do? Not blog about it? That's crazy talk, especially considering they were not required to sign a non-discloser disclaimer.

Censorship is one thing, but censorship without any legal standing is just, well it's just begging. Which ever way Metallica are aiming, censorship sucks, and they wont win any brownie points with this game.

Oh boy, what a topic. I love Metallica. Almost all of their music strikes me as awesome.

That being said, I think they make great musicians, but very very poor activists/politicians( or maybe good politicians?). Who were they kidding with the internet take down? Anyone who is anyone knows that artist's make diddly squat off of record sales. Its all about concert tours for money making real money as a performer. The vast majority of record sale profit goes straight into the corporate hands of record labels and Best Buy. All the proof you need is the fact that Dr. Dre joined the bandwagon. Why? He owns his own record label. So he was legitimately loosing a lot of money.

Anyways did they really think they would put an end to the internet? If anything they helped other multiple software developers get a piece of the market share for p2p! The irony!

So here we are, blogging and commenting negatively about Metallica 10 years later. That is one sure way to kill a legacy. Good work Metallica, I'm glad it worked out so well for you. I won't be going to a concert or buying a CD anytime soon.

Good post Mikey

Metallica apologise, on behalf of their management, for killing early reviews!

The best thrash metal band ever period. But after watching the documentary Some Kind Of Monster it became very clear that they no longer write music because they love it, it is merely a means to the next pay day. The hatred and arguing between Lars and James was shocking, how can you write meaningful energetic soulful music when the two main songwriters cant stand each other? Dangle a phat royalty cheque in front of them and let them churn out 60 minutes of drivel thats how. Hopefully the new album actually has riffs, and fire Bob Cock, he cant mix music for $hit!

I agree Mike, I couldn't stop watching it but it opened my eyes to a few things which shattered some illusions I had on the band. Personally I would be happy if they re-released ...And Justice For All with a couple of new tracks, I listen to bits off that album weekly and it still makes me headbang in the car.

...in response to this comment by Mikey. Is that the one where they sat around with the therapist?

If it is. That one just made me hate and I mean hate Metallica. It took this image I had of these guys which was Heavy Metal Gods and turned them into whiny little girls.

I want my rockstars to be just that rockstars. Larger than life and lives shrouded in secrecy.

Lars does generally come across as a massive plonker, same as in the old 'Year and a half' videos. I thought it was funny how he was so concerned about his dad's approval of the album in that doco, and his dad basically told him it sucked! Father knows best.
