Laptop Hunters: Microsoft's latest advertising campaign

We've seen some embarrassing and some funny advertising campaigns from Microsoft over the years, but their latest hits Apple squarely in their week spot, because it's about price.

There's nothing wrong with a Mac, and I could easily do my job on it because the same applications are available - the Adobe Creative Suite - as are many more. But in my humble opinion the additional expense that comes with a purchase of a Mac - or the Apple tax as it's also known - doesn't give you anything extra. Except maybe a shiny thin form factor and some software you might not even want.

Anyway here they are for your scrutiny. Propaganda? Yeah a little, but can you get a new Mac with the same specs for the same money?

Oh wouldn't be nice if I could afford any Laptop regardless of maker.
To me a Laptop is a portable device, something that you can create a letter with or do some math functions while mobile. The reasons why they are so expensive are because of the amount of hardware that they are trying to cram into it.
If you want to do some serious work then the good old high powered desktop computer is still the way to go. Something that does the work, has a correct sized keyboard and big screen and only costs half the price of a similar Laptop.
I have always used an IBM format computer; have played with Macs but still like Windows. Yes the price is the main obstacle for me and always will be.
I have always built the computer from scratch, disregarding the name brands at all costs. If I can't build it then I don't want it!
Yes a Laptop would be nice but I would never have it sitting on my lap so I don't know why they are still referred to as that. With the amount of heat these things pump out there is no way I want too close to my private areas :)
I wish that MS and APPPLE would just get along and stop this "my one is better then yours". They are at war only because the OS are slightly different. The hardware whether APPLE or IBM (PC); (Personal Computer) is just the same, they are all "Programme Counters" hence where the term "PC" came from originally.
Come on guys combine your efforts and make a computer that everyone will use regardless of price.......

...in response to this comment by TVBIZ(BOB). "combine your efforts and make a computer that everyone will use regardless of price"

Ditto. As it stands right now PC laptops will always be cheaper than Mac laptops, but I fail to see the reason why even PC laptops are so much more expensive that their much more powerful desktop counterparts.

Laptops are more expensive than desktops for two reasons. Firstly, the components are more expensive but secondly, and more importantly, they come wit h the same issue as Macs - i.e. they're generally brand name. "Generic" brand laptops are significantly cheaper than brand name laptops.

You will always pay more for brand. And this is not always a bad thing. For example, Dell cost more than generic laptops. But if something goes wrong with your Dell hardware, you probably have a 3 year hardware warranty and the parts will be available - and in a reasonable time without much fuss. Apple too. If something goes wrong with your generic brand laptop hardware, well, you're probably going to be scouring eBay for replacement parts and even if they have them in stock, you probably will have to send your laptop away for repairs, which could take months.

*That's* what you're paying for when you buy brand name and that's why it costs more. The support that stands behind if. At least, that's what you should be paying for. If you're just buying Apple coz you just want to look unique or different, well, I got news for you...

In any case, Apple and Microsoft have no compelling reason to "get along". They're competitors. Their whole business model is based on you selecting their product over the competition. Ideally, this should create a healthy marketplace where the competition are innovative and the end product is continuously improved. For all the negative you can say about Windows, this can clearly be shown to be the case by comparing OS7 to the latest OSX or Windows 95 to Windows 7, etc.

...in response to this comment by TVBIZ(BOB). I have a 17" Dell Inspiron 1705 that sits on a Rubbermaid Laptop Adjustable Laptop stand to allow adequate ventilation so the laptop doesn't heat up. I can put it on any surface or on my lap, very comfortably, without fear of injuring my "privates". :)

I think MS did well to focus on the cost argument. It weights heavily with most consumers, and it is true.

I always buy refurbished if I can. I got a basically brand new Sony Vaio for around 600 bucks. Dual core, 2.4 gig, with a 120 gig hard drive, and 1.5 gigs of ram. Nothing wrong it at all, no aesthetic blemeshes or hardware malfunctions. Works just the new one but for half the price.

...in response to this comment by Papa. I'm considering doing the same. I need something to bash around on during the train ride too and from work - I could get a couple of hours productivity in easy.
