Who wants to see Bill Murray in 3D?

Who wants to see Bill Murray in 3D?

I'm a big Bill Murray fan so I'm cool with that. But even if you already knew that Ghostbusters 3 is in the pipeline, what you may not have known is that Director Ivan Reitman is alegadly planning to shoot the entire movie in stereoscopic 3D.

Call me a cynic, but it seems that in a post Avatar world every director and his dog thinks shooting in 3D is the way to go. Personally I think only some films benefit from a 3D experience, and given the subject matter of ghosts I will tentatively say that Ghostbusters 3 could be a suitable project for the 3D gimmick. Time will tell.

This is the 3rd resurrection of 3D in cinemas (the last one I saw was Jaws 3D - and boy did it suck) that I can remember, and it wont be long before it dies again.

For what it's worth, enjoy it while it lasts :-)

Maybe, and then again maybe not Mikey. This time technology has caught up has it not? I mean 3D televisions are only months away from hitting our shores so maybe that suggests that the technology is viable this time and it is here to stay? Maybe?

That being said you Mikey you know we live in a 'fad' based world in which as soon as one thing becomes successful or popular every man and his dog just has to jump on the bandwagon.

I think 3D has cred in an animated world but maybe not so much in the real world of movies. Having said THAT, after seeing those 3D renders you posted the other day, the lines are going to get very very blurry very very soon me thinx!!!

Yeah, I am hearing some disconcerting things about this film. I hear the plot consists of the "old guard" handing over to the "new blood" and the old Ghostbusters may be just a cameo type role?

Kind of makes me think of bringing in a bunch of generic, plastic, pretty people and just ruining the whole thing by letting the marketing team get stuck into it. Here's a quote from Aykroyd about the script:

"There’ll be a whole new generation that has to be trained and a leader that you'll all love when you meet her. There'll be lots of cadets, boys and girls who'll be learning how to use the neuron splitter and the inter-planet interceptor - new tools to enable them to slip from dimension to dimension."

So instead of 3 lovable dorks, we're going to wind up with a hot-chick in charge, and lots of athletic young models filling in the background? Sounds like later seasons of Red Dwarf.

Poochie anyone? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Itchy_&_Scratchy_&_Poochie_Show)

3D is the next big thing - yes. Uptake will be another story. The best 3D televisions are still very unconvincing, and have the disadvantage of forcing 3D onto everyone else in the living room who don't want in 3D to watch or can't because of a visual impairment. Or maybe they're just not into 3D.

Plus 3D TV's are way way way outside the purchasing power of the average consumer. A measly 40 inch will burn a $12,000 hole in your wallet. A 50 inch (still a small screen IMHO) will cost you around $50,000. Going by that math, the 60 inch Sony Bravia that currently adorns my theatre room would have cost me around $88,000 if it were a 3D set.

Research shows that people are only recently comfortable buying flat screen TV's. Convincing them to buy another one at 10 times the cost will prove almost impossible. Like any new tech it will be several years before it becomes common place, and longer for it to become affordable. But you know me matey - I will be first in line for a 3D set like I am with every new tech. But you also know I am in a vast minority :-)

Bluray is testament to this fact. They are finding it nearly impossible to get people to buy Bluray because Joe TV thinks his DVD's look fine, so there's no reason to pay for those movies again. It's strictly still aficionado territory at his stage. I won't watch anything unless it's on Bluray now. Sounds dumb I know, but the picture quality is so jaw dropping I simply won't go back.

3D will be great, but I'm not holding my breath for it to be common place. Give it 5 - 10 years.

But on the subject of if its' hear to stay or not - the jury is still out :-)
