Disc2Phone working on Vista

Disc2Phone working on Vista

With every new operating system comes software compatibility issues. And the Sony Ericsson Disc2Phone application is no exception.

A few weeks ago I tried everything I could think of to get Disc2Phone to work under Windows Vista. The problems I experienced were mirrored by many web sites who also gave up. A statement on the Sony Ericsson support site says "The Sony Ericsson PC Suite and Disc2Phone for Windows Vista™ will both be available for download on www.sonyericsson.com/support in Q2".

But today I sat down determined to find a work around, and I am happy to report I was able to get Disc2Phone to work on Windows Vista Ultimate. So what did I do different this time than last?

When I connected my W800i via USB, I was immediately prompted for drivers. Rather than insert the driver CD this time, I selected the 'Locate and install driver' option, followed by the 'Yes, search online this time only' option (or 'always search online' if you want that). The drivers were automatically retrieved and installed. I then downloaded and installed the latest version of Disc2Phone (which still does not have Vista support), and launched the application.

Locate Driver

Search Online

So far so good. I can manage my music just as I was able to on my old XP machine. The only thing I did different this time was let Vista find drivers online for me instead of using my driver CD. So I can only guess that is what made the difference.

For those who need to know, I am running Windows Vista Ultimate. My device manager screenshot is shown below with the relevant sections highlighted. Click for larger version.

Device Manager

Update: As of today (1st June 2007) the Disc2Phone application is available for Vista.

I have installed the new 1.5 version of the software, and immediately ran into trouble. The problem was my music was not showing up in the right hand list pane. Upon closer inspection I noticed that a new folder called 'Music' had been automatically created on my internal memory card. My music resides in a folder called 'MP3', which was automatically created by the previous Disc2Phone version.

So why does the version 1.5 look for a 'Music' folder instead? I don't know, but the solution was easy. In Windows Explorer just rename the existing 'MP3'  folder to 'Music'. Run Disc2Phone 1.5 and you are set.

It's a crappy software anyway. You can't even create playlists.

I called Sony Ericcson and asked them to add the ability to do song lists on the desktop. When and if they do it they will send us an email.

Secondly, the US link for the VISTA version of the PC Suite software appears broken, so I went to the OK site to download it.

I had that previous version of Disc2Phone and it never worked. After reading the updated comment here, I installed version 1.5 and I still have the same problem.
I renamed the 'MP3' folder to 'MUSIC', started Disc2Phone, my files were visible in the right pane; I transfered a few mp3 files and disconnected. It did make folders on my phone but there is no music! It either tell me 'Playback failed' or 'No tracks found. This problem might be caused by using the wrong PC software. Please use Disc2Phonesoftware to transfer your music files to your phone.'
Does anyone know why this thing is happening? My phone is w800i.
Thanks in advance!

Sony's software is a bit poor, bloated and has some silly logic like the folder name... But it works, just about. Previous versions and drivers were PATHETICALLY unreliable for the W800i - e.g. you can't reliably connect to a USB 2.0 port, and install the phone in Windows, but if you download the phone firmware update - which has to be applied by installing the phone in Windows - it fixes this problem immediately. How people can get paid for producing the original disgraceful standard of product, I don't know. The world is therefore insane, going by leading companies' policies, so don't moan when the little man goes mad and starts shooting-up a public place! Seriously, maybe they were sparked off by the stress of getting such annoying buggy software to work... you really don't know!

Bad software, you say? Nothing beats Nokia's software when it comes to bloat, usability and functionality.

Seriously...Disc2Phone was marvellous in comparison.

Hi
I have tried to use SE Disc2phone (ver. 1.5 I believe) with Vista to transfer songs to my W810. It works fine if you keep the bitrate unchaged. As soon as you change the bitrate, the application terminates with an error "Disc2phone has stopped working"
Could u help me? Do u know any solution?

Thanks

Good News if you were having trouble running it on Vista.

Sony-Ericsson have released some software called ‘Media Manager 1.0’ (go to www.sonyericsson.co.uk then support then software downloads).

This does everything that Disc2Phone did and more – and it works properly with Vista!

They obviously intend it to replace Disc2Phone because the new version of PC Suite (3.107.00) no longer refers to Disc2Phone but refers to Media Manager instead.

I don’t think the new version of PC Suite is a co-requisite for Media Manager but I did install it first.

Not sure about the Mac. Even though Mac users are in the minority (around 6% of desktops last I checked) I would find it hard to believe they wouldn't make a Mac version of the software.

I downloaded the software and got the music to show up on the file transfer list, but when I click "TRANSFER", it says, I need to put in the memory stick/usb, when it is already pluggged in.

the device manager says my memory card is working fine, but I can't install the device driver software when i plug in the usb.

What do I do?

I have a really unusual problem in that now I have installed SE disc2phone when I try to launch it - Windows Liive Messenger tries to log in!!!

If I try to enter my account details to logon to Mesenger, the application hangs.

Done the usual, uninstall, re-install - download the lastest version of SE PC suite, uninstalled, re-installed - downloaded .net 1.1 and installed it still no luck, so.....uninstalled, re-installed......

If anyone has experienced this then you'll know how annoying this can be - any help would be greatly appreaciated!

I've installed Disc2Phone 1.5, all the Microsoft.NET stuff, the drivers it said I needed etc but when I try to transfer a song to my Sony Ericsson W200i, Windows says Dic2Phone has stopped working, it will report the problem and let me know if a solution is found, it then shuts the program down. I have Vista Home Premium. Does anyone else have this problem and have you solved it?
Thanks
