Breast implants linked to increased suicide

A study published this month (August 2007) by researchers at the International Epidemiology Institute and the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm suggests that women who have breast implants are three times more likely to die by suicide or drug and alcohol related abuse.

Published in last August's 'Annals of Plastic Surgery', the researchers also concede it is unclear if the increased risk factor is associated with pre-existing psychiatric illness or not.

But how much of this is linked to the low self-esteem they had in the first place. Then when they had the implants and life didn't become perfect, they weren't prepared to cope?

Also, how much is Anna Nicole Smith skewing the results? (Too soon?)

i tend to agree with you rodney, my daughter just had implants done just to feel good in herself which she says she does. i think some females do it for someone else..my daughter has definetly done it for herself....

Yeah for sure. I know a young lady who, through circumstances well beyond her control, grew up without the normal "trappings" of womanhood. She was mercilessly teased at school and had implants to feel "normal". In her case, though, I think the damage was done, by spending her adolescence being so harshly teased. So while she feels more easily able to fit in now, she's still missd out on the chance to grow up with a fair go. I doubt anyone would begrudge the the chance to try.

I think the big problem comes out when people feel that this is the reason they don't fit in or are not happy. Then they change that one thing... but life is just the same as the day before... That's when people simply run out of the will to go on, I suppose... This works for all kinds of "quick fixes", too.

At least that's what I saw on a TV documentary one day. but it does make sense.

Having dated a number (2 is still a number) of well proportioned, fake breasted ladies, I feel ever so slightly qualified to make a comment. Rod, you've pretty much god it; though also coupled with an apparent need for attention which enevitably becomes the wrong sort of attention. Obviously, I'm generalising here.

Or maybe the women who killed themselves became emotionally unstable after experiencing terrible complications from their implants that caused disfigurement and years of pain and chronic illness. This is an alternative scenario I saw here

Sorry, I thought the link would take.

I saw the alternative scenario on the Beauty and the Breast Blog
