Australian energy crisis looming: Flat panel TV's to take the fall?

I can't believe this one flew underneath my radar, but according to an article on Gizmodo, there is a chance that all flat panel televisions (both LCD and Plasma) will be banned from sale by 2011.

Apparently the energy consumption of said televisions is way too high and the maximum power requirements will not be met by TV manufacturers.

For what it's worth, each summer we West Aussie's (I can't speak for the rest of the country) have been asked to switch off our our conditioning and anything else deemed an 'unnecessary' waste of energy, while the powers that be (pun intended) try to work out a solution to the 'energy crisis'.

I can't help but think a better solution can be found rather than banning high powered electrical devices. It's not a realistic approach, and somehow I doubt it will ever come to fruition.

Yes, I heard about this. It won't be all plasmas and LCDs banned, just those with a high energy rating. I dare say that we will see the next evolution of these types of TVs coming out very soon (as a necessity) which will easily comply with the energy ratings.

On a side note. You power hungry kittens in the west see more sun (on average) than those of us on the east... time to invest in solar technology. Most energy companies and governments give hefty rebates to those willing to provide their own power and any energy not used can be routed into the power grid, allowing you to make money off the power companies.

Sounds like the beginning of a FUD campaign to garner public support for a nuclear power plant.
